FALL 2023 NEWSLETTER

The Whitehall Borough Historical Society was incorporated in June 2022 with the mission to preserve and promote the history and foster knowledge of our borough. To accomplish this mission, the Society’s officers, trustees and members engage in research; preserve documents, photos and artifacts; and provide presentations and publications for the benefits of residents, businesses and the general public. These efforts are planned and executed in coordination with our Library and Recreation Department.

The Society actively seeks photos, documents, publications and memorabilia relevant to the history of our Borough and its residents and businesses. If you have such items and would like to donate or loan them for future displays and presentations, please contact the Society. All objects are stored and secured properly.

We encourage all residents and local businesses to become Historical Society members. Applications are available at our Library or by contacting the Society on our Facebook page or whitehallhistory100@gmail.com or by mail at PO Box 10911, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15236. Members are notified about scheduled meetings, planned events and enjoy complimentary admission to the Heinz History Museum facilities. Annual membership fees are $10.00 per individual, $20.00 for a family and $50.00 for a business/organization. Please make checks out to Whitehall Borough Historical Society.

Upcoming presentations include our annual membership meeting on October 12th in the Whitehall Borough Community Room at 7 pm. Our featured speaker is Andy Masich, the President and CEO of the Heinz History Center. We will also be honoring our first History Student of the Year. In January, we will have author Tom McMillan as our speaker. More details will be available soon.

Our recent online auction for the Borough street signs was very successful! There were 210 signs sold at the online auction which ran for several weeks. Bids started at $25.00, with a “buy now” price of $75.00. The new payout for the Historical Society was $13,108.00. In addition, quite a few signs were sold offline at Community Day, so street signs are now well over $15,000.00. Remaining street signs are available to purchase by contacting the Historical Society via email at whitehallhistory100@gmail.com.

Thanks to the Borough’s generosity the Whitehall Borough Historical Society has funds to allocate towards special programs, as well as appropriate archival materials and storage of Whitehall Borough’s historical documents, photo’s and other artifacts.

Whitehall Borough Historical Society 2024 calendars which feature classic photo’s of Whitehall’s past are now available at the Whitehall Library, Princess Lanes and Holly’s Hallmark in Caste Village for $5.00. If you order by mail, the cost is $7.50 to cover postage and handling. To order by mail please contact the Historical Society at whitehallhistory100@gmail.com

Dr. Robert Olson

On August 27th Dr. Robert Olson spoke to over 40 members of the Whitehall community. His talk was about Amelia Earhart, the famous female aviator who disappeared on a trip around the world. Although Dr. Olson could not prove what happened to Amelia, he did give some ideas based on various books regarding her trip. Dr. Olson is a professor Emeritus from Thiel College, Head of the History department and Former President of the College. We thank him for his interesting and informative talk.
